Image sensor and the Processor:

Camera is loaded with the Digic 4 processor and the isaps(intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) technology which is the advanced technology developed by huge amount of research done by canon on their collected database , and statistical relation between the focal length, camera to object distance and the brightness in the surrounding. The technology intelligently combine the data taken from the recent photograph of camera and improve the precision, autofocus, White balance etc.

The sensor used by the camera is the CMOS sensor which boast a modest 12.1 megapixels from a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor. Its suffix HS denotes to the sensor low light sensitivity as claimed by the canon.

Storage, Connectivity and the battery:

The camera don’t have the internal memory but it can support almost every version of high speed camera card available in the market such as SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC, MMC plus, HCMMC plus. The camera supports for the HDMI Mini Connector (HDMI-CEC compatible) A/V output (PAL/NTSC) and also for the computer it support the Hi-Speed USB (MTP, PTP) dedicated connector (Mini-B compatible). The direct print can be taken if the printer support the pictBridge. The camera comes with the rechargeable battery pack that is Lithium NB-4L that use to provide a power to take 220 shot approx. and 330 min playback. Also optional Ac power kit are available for this model.

Body design and Ease of Handling:

Canon IXUS 220 HS comes with the slim stainless body and the glossy finish. The camera in spite of make from stainless steel does not feel heavy. The glossy finish is more prone to the dust and scratches and more effort is required to clean the surface. The absence of rubber grip and smooth finish lacks a firm grip when shooting handheld. The button are nicely placed and typically like a compact camera, there is a dedicated button for video recording and the smart mode that switch alternately. The LCD screen is of 2.7 inch and nicely built to see in all condition and angle. The menu are very logical and a novice can operate easily.

On the camera back there is a slider to switch standard auto mode and the program auto mode.

Performance:

For people who want to point and shoot, the easy smart auto mode do the trick, the smart mode analysis the photo against the 32 variable and produce the optimum condition for shot, Servo AF\AE takes the focusing system of the camera and take the main subject in focus and avoid overexposure. The battery does not have much strength and last for only 220 shots, which is not very good for outdoor shooting but perfect for indoor shooting. The Auto focus is not fast and almost take 3 to 4 second to focus while pressing the shooting button fully. Data writing capability to the memory card is not the fastest, you have to wait for few second to move from shooting of one image to the other.

Image Quality:

The camera takes properly exposed photographs at the widest configuration of camera. The detailing is fairly good at the center and there are some distortion and chromic aberration at the corner. The Zoom shots are excellent due to the dual stabilization mode. The ISO 100 has a negligible noise and the ISO 200 is the point where noise start building up, till the 400- 800 you will find the sign of the chromatic aberration and the image start losing it sharpness after 800 ISO, the 1600 and 3200 have the highest level of noise. So it’s clearly state that camera is not made for low lighting condition photography. Color contrast and white balance in camera is extremely good and produce crisp images at ideal light condition. The macro setting allow you to focus 3cm away from the object.

Video Quality:

Camera provide video quality of 1080p along with the super slow motion movie mode but the camera lacks the zooming capability in the video mode. Movie shooting can be done in the program auto mode where the proper exposure is determined by the scene detection. Movie shooting deploys Dynamic IS which removes out any wobble cause during the shooting. Overall the video quality is good with a average sharpness and the audio recording is clear and recognizable.

Conclusion:

Canon IXUS 200 HS hold the canon run in the designing of the smart sleek , attractive camera, though the camera does not seems to be very much exciting but also on the other aspect it is not removing the large weight from your pocket. Although it’s not a bad camera but not’s the greatest one .Lacking in the DOF fast pace photography and manual control that is over expected from this range but it stands out from the competitor and the feature like HDMI output, Full HD recording and selective digital filters are an add on and make the camera competent in its range.
