The Redmi 2 Prime is not really successor to the Redmi 2, rather a 16 GB variant of it. Everything about the phone from top to bottom is identical to the Redmi 2 , with a bump in the internal storage from 8 Gb to 16 Gb and a very well deserved 2 GB RAM over the 1 GB of the Redmi 2.
Design And Build:
There is nothing at all in this phone to differentiate it from the Redmi 2. The phone retains all the design elements of the Redmi 2.
The Redmi 2 Prime has a 8 MP rear snapper and a 2 MP front camera. The 8 MP is really good, does pretty decent in low light conditions as well. This is thanks to the sensor which is a f/2.2 with 1.4 µm pixel size. The 2 MP front camera does a good job with selfies as well.
The display is the same 4.7 inch 720p IPS LCD panel, so it’s pretty nice to look at, and since the screen is smaller, the pixel density is pretty decent at 312ppi. The absence of onscreen buttons give more room on the screen as well.
The processor is the same Snapdragon 410 chip as seen on the Redmi 2 as well as the Moto G3. Along with the Adreno 306 the phone can handle almost everything you throw at it, the almost is because of the OS, MIUI. MIUI is a nice and tweakable OS, but it comes with a cost; it’s a rather heavy UI and it’s iPhone like home screen might not be to the liking of all. The phone runs on Android Kitkat, but since it’s Miui you really can’t differentiate between Kitkat and Lollipop. Xiaomi has really fixed the one flaw the Redmi 2 had, and that’s the RAM, the Redmi 2 Prime has 2 GB RAM and that makes the phone run smoothly even with MIUI.
The phone has a decent 2200 mAh Li-Po removable battery, same as in the Redmi 2. There are still fans of removable batteries out there. The phone lasts you a day easily and Redmi really does shine in the standby department.
It may be seen as the 16 GB variant of the Redmi 2, but for the extra 1000 bucks you pay for it for the internal memory and the 2 GB RAM, this phone is pretty much the best in class. It pretty much makes the Redmi 2 obsolete, that soon only the Redmi 2 Prime will be available.
